Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) and a Psychologist?
There are several parts to this answer; For the purpose of medicare rebates, Accredited Mental Health Social Workers and Psychologists can both offer medicare subsidised services. There may be a difference in the amount of rebate you receive. As an accredited Mental Health Social Worker I can provide a rebate of $82.30(as of 23/05/2024). This changes yearly. Psychologists will be trained in Psychology which is the study of the mind, brain and behaviour. A Social Worker is trained in these concepts along with how systems and disadvantage effects people and communities along with other theories of society, law and welfare. An Accredited Mental Health Social Worker is also required to have additional specialised skills in the treatment of mental health issues and wellbeing and the treatment of mental health conditions. I personally, hold qualifications in Psychology, Social Work and Neuroscience. I have been selective in my skills and training as I have always wanted to ensure I am providing the most appropriate and effective service I can for my clients. For the purpose of counselling, Psychologists and AMHSW’s will both hold training and experience in counselling modalities suitable in treating mental health issues. They are both expected to provide ‘Focused Psychological Strategies’ to be registered to provide medicare subsidised services. Long story short, there may not be much difference when it comes to either profession except for the individuals counselling expertise and experiences, which is why it is important to do some research to find the right fit for you.
